Earlier this year, we reported that Detroit’s three casinos were closed due to COVID-19 lockdown measures. We also reported that they were allowed to reopen at 15% capacity.
While operating at such limited capacity is far from ideal, some revenue is better than none, but things have taken a turn for the worse in the final quarter of 2020. Governor Gretchen Whitmer has ordered them closed once again as part of a package of new lockdown measures to control rising cases in the state.
That’s certainly not what Detroit’s casino operators want to hear, but as of Wednesday, it’s law in the Great Lake State.
New Woes for Detroit Casinos – The Details
After a tough year, another lockdown is the last thing Detroit or any other US city needs. However, unlike the previous lockdown, this one will only last for three weeks. As cases rose to over 250,000, Governor Whitmer ordered the new short lockdown in an attempt to regain control of the pandemic.
As has been the case at other casinos across the USA, the Greektown, MGM Grand Detroit, and MotorCity may have to lay off some staff. This has not yet been announced, but it’s not hard to see the writing on the wall as a potentially “Dark Winter” lies ahead for the USA.
Will all of these iconic casinos survive? It depends in part on the financial aid they receive, but either way, they’ll be closed for the next few weeks, putting further pressure on their finances.

Can Americans Play Casino Games Safely?
Intelligent readers probably do not need us to interpret this story for them. Cases are rising rapidly across the USA, and casinos are not a safe place to be. While this story is about Detroit casinos, we’d recommend avoiding them in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, or anywhere else.
So, is there a way to play casino table and card games online safely? Yes, there is. Americans from most states can enjoy roulette, blackjack, and baccarat with live dealers at Red Dog Casino.
You can read a full Red Dog Casino review here on our site, but in brief, these three casino games are powered by Visionary iGaming. This is a high-quality live gaming company that specializes in serving the US market.
In times like these, there’s no need to take risks with your health by visiting real-world casinos. The Detroit lockdown is probably one of the first of many more to come in the days and weeks ahead. It’s much safer to play quality live dealer games from home.
