Michigan made headlines last year when it legalized online casino gaming, but that hasn’t overshadowed its booming land-based casino industry.
In 2021, which was a difficult year for many land casinos across the world, Michigan casinos doubled their revenue to $1.3 billion.
A closer look at the numbers
Michigan has three casinos based in the capital city Detroit; the MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino, and GreekTown Casino.
The $1.3 billion in revenue was reported between the three.
- The number represents a 103% gain in revenue year on year.
- Slot machines accounted for 77% of the revenue at $998.8 million.
- Table games brought in 21% of the revenue with $268 million.
- Sports betting also accounted for 2%, bringing in $26.95 million.
It’s important to note that the year-on-year growth is so inflated because 2020 was a particularly difficult year for Michigan casino operators. That year, with the global health crisis in full swing, the casinos only brought in $639 million. However, the year before, in 2019, they brought in $1.45 billion, meaning this year’s revenue fell slightly short of that record.
Of the three casinos, the MGM Grand came out on top with the most revenue.
- The MGM Grand had 43 percent of the market share.
- MotorCity had a market share of 35 percent.
- GreekTown came in third with 22 percent of the market.
How much did all of this gambling activity generate for the state of Michigan in taxes? $102.6 million; no small sum by any stretch of the imagination.
