The plan was that Suarez would wear the mouth guard which would be visible before the Uruguay – Columbia match during the singing of the countries’ national anthems. The advertising of Paddy Power on the player’s gum shield would not have been part of an official World Cup sponsorship deal but would have given the Paddy Power brand great exposure. The fact that Suarez was given a 9 international match ban as well as a four month complete football ban put an end to any discussions between Paddy Power and Suarez.
