However, we haven’t forgotten Michigan’s thriving land-based casinos. After a rough year due to extensive lockdowns across the state, casinos in Detroit and elsewhere are back, and they’re booming.
In June 2021, Detroit’s casinos reported $108.1 million in revenue. Clearly, Michiganders have an itch to get back to real-world gaming floors.
More on Michigan’s Recent Figures
The June stats were reported by the Michigan Gaming Control Board and are based on Detroit’s three casinos.
The $108.1 million in revenue includes casino slot machines, table games, and sports betting at the land casinos. It does not include revenue derived from the recently legalized iGaming industry.
Here’s a breakdown of the revenue by casino:
- MGM Grand Detroit reported $46.3 million in revenue.
- Motor City’s market share was $37.2 million.
- Greektown came in third with $22.3 million on the books.
These figures are despite the casinos operating under capacity for 21 days in June. These restrictions have now been lifted, so July’s numbers should be even better.
Between them, these Detroit casinos paid $8.6 million in gaming taxes and $12.6 million in taxes on real money wagering taxes. The tax figures for iGaming have yet to come in, but you can bet several other cash-hungry states are watching and will make decisions about legalization based on them. As economies reopen, legal iGaming could be a golden opportunity for some states.

Clearly, Michiganders still have a huge appetite for real-world casinos. There’s no replacing the comradery, entertainment, and some other aspects of real-world casinos, although online games also offer advantages.
